The Wine of Bolgheri

In 1968, after years of experimentation, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta launched the first bottle of Sassicaia. He planted a vineyard of cabernet with the intention of producing wines similar to those of Bordeaux. Thus was born the first “Supertuscan”, which consecrated Bolgheri as one of the most important areas for wine production.

In the late 70s and early 90s, many wineries settled in the area, producing wines with grapes such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Today, Bolgheri is renowned for these wines, which initially classified as table wines, became DOC in the 90s and are now recognized as wines of excellence worldwide.

To reach the village of Bolgheri, cross the famous Viale dei Cipressi, celebrated by Giosuè Carducci. This avenue, about 5 km long, is lined with tall secular cypresses. From afar, you can see the charming red brick castle. Approaching, you get to the castle tower and the door to the city center, surmounted by the great coat of arms of the Della Gherardesca counts, the ancient noble family to which Bolgheri has been linked since 1200.

The center of the village is full of small shops, shops of typical products and picturesque alleys where to walk. Many restaurants and bars offer the opportunity to taste typical products and enjoy a romantic dinner at sunset, when the village, illuminated, turns into an enchanted place.

The spectacle of vineyards and olive groves immersed in the Mediterranean maquis, the medieval village, the hills and the sea in the distance, together with wine tasting, make this place unique and special.
