The Gulf of Baratti is a natural oasis nestled between Poggio San Leonardo and the promontory of Piombino, a few kilometers south of Marina di Bibbona. Along the bay there is a wonderful beach of golden sand with a thousand reflections of light. The sand is in fact enriched by microscopic grains of iron that shine under the sun, residues of the ancient iron works in Etruscan and Roman times, when the area was an important iron processing center from Elba Island.
As evidence of this fervent industrial past, near the beach there are numerous Etruscan necropolis. Beyond the pine forest that separates the beach from the countryside of the hinterland, you enter an archaeological park that you can visit independently, following the marked paths.
The sea of the Gulf of Baratti is clear and calm, ideal for small children thanks to the seabed that remains low for several meters from the shore. In addition, Baratti houses a small marina, able to accommodate some sailing boats and catamarans. This combination of natural and historical beauty makes the Gulf of Baratti an unmissable destination for those visiting the Etruscan Coast.
